On A Day Like Today (1998)
Released on 20 October, 1998, 'On A Day Like Today' was released a month after the lead single of the same name. Heavily influenced by mid-90's Brit-Pop on tracks such as 'How Do Ya Feel Tonight' (thanks to Phil Thornally), the album is far less tongue-in-cheek than the previous studio album - '18 Til I Die'. It was far less of a commercial success due to poor promotion brought about by the collapse of BA's record company. The album bombed in the USA and BA hasn't really recovered in that market ever since.

Bryan took Guitarist Mag (UK) through the album, track by track...

HOW DO YA FEEL TONIGHT
People will doubtless remark on it's 'Oasis' vibe

Could be the Neil Young in me coming out! A lot of the 'Brit sound' on this song comes from Phil Thornally (ex-Cure, now Natalie Imbruglia producer); I can't take the credit for that, but I love it and it works great in this song.

C'MON C'MON C'MON
Adams meets Lennon?

Yeah, it's definately my Lennon side showing, but it's also a song about reaching out and getting to where you want to go, but with someone.

GETAWAY
Typical good-time Adams rocker Keith Scott slide solo?

Yep, good ol' Keith drivin' one straight off the floor again.

ON A DAY LIKE TODAY
Hard to play Am, C, G and D now without Gallagher references

Ha! yes you're right. Never mind. Phil Thornally's idea originally, and I stepped in afterwards. Love the song.

FEARLESS
Great harmonies. General feeling that simplicity was the key throughout the album.

Very much so. We didn't have much time to put it all together, so the simpler the songs the easier it was to record. Like I used to make records.

I'M A LIAR
Great mix of retro and modern sounds... lots of Strat...

Actually, theres a Gibson SG in there too. We had a lot of guitars to choose from and I used more Gibson on this record than ever.

CLOUD #9
Straightahead pop-rock...

Indeed. An idea that had been kicking around for a while; again, very simple.

WHEN YOU'RE GONE
How do you come up with so many different songs using the basic open chords (that's a compliment, by the way)?

Ha! It's the old "I know three chords and I'm gonna use 'em" scenario. This was the last song written for the album.

INSIDE OUT
The next single?

'When You're Gone' could be the next single. This song features my ambient Jamaican recordings. There was a huge electrical storm one morning and I turned on my Discman and got some of the frogs and thunder. It's a lovely lyric, perhaps the best on the album.

IF I HAD YOU
'Tommorrow Never Knows' with chords. Psychedelic - very cool.

Some people really like this song. It was a poem I had started and one day, while messing with some grooves with Phil Western (keyboard/programmer), I plopped this melody on top of the words... and voila!

BEFORE THE NIGHT IS OVER
Summer of '98?

Definately the old me. It has that 'Reckless' sound. It was one of Bob Rock's faves and he faught hard to keep it on the record.

I DON'T WANNA LIVE FOREVER
The rock myth? The rock cliche?

Just the idea of living for the moment. Totally living for today. It's how I like to think, although it's not always practical. I always wished I could do whatever I wanted and not have to pay for the consequences. Not possible, I'm afraid!

WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD
Beautifully constructed. Danger of being compared to 'that' song. Would you mind this?

Not at all! I think it's one of the most beautiful songs I've recorded. It's simple, with a lovely lyric. It was written in Jamaica one night, watching the television through a window - figure that one out! Seriously, this could be one of my favourite records; when I heard the strings for the first time, I had to hide my face so the lads wouldn't see me getting all emotional!

LIE TO ME
A subtle song. A great finisher.

The first song that Eliot Kennedy (Spice Girls writer) and I wrote together and the first one written for the album. It's just a funny coincidence that it closes the album - in America, the previous song is the final track.

The album was released with varied tracklists... for some reason the US market didn't get 'Lie To Me' on their release, while the Japanese had 'Hey Baby' included as well. After the success of the Chicane remix of Cloud #9 in Europe, the track was added to the end of the album and re-released internationally. The album bombed in the USA on both counts.
