26/03/06 - 31/03/06 - HERVEY BAY, BRISBANE AND BYRON BAY

I hadn't gotten round to booking myself on the Oz Ex bus before Fraser Island to leave Hervey Bay, which meant I was stuck in Hervey Bay until Wednesday. Haywood, Charlie, John and Hannah were booked on the bus leaving Monday, which meant they could have a couple of days in Noosa on the way to Brisbane.

This meant I had 3 crazy days in Hervey Bay. My main problem was how was I going to fit everything in that I wanted to do!? There's the supermarket....the tourist information.....the other supermarket.... Actually it wasn't that bad. Monday I hung out with some guys from the Oz Ex bus. We went to the beach and played some pool. Tuesday I sunbathed and then went to the beach (which was huge and completely deserted) and played my guitar.

The only cool thing about Hervey Bay is that there's 1000s upon 1000s of bats there. And at sunset every night, they fly from one side of the city to the other. This means the sky is completely covered in bats!

Wednesday I set off for Brisbane. In the morning we did some Australian "cultural" stuff, such as playing the didgeridoo, throwing a boomerang and a spear. I was a little concerned that I was crap at the throwing but really good at blowing the didgeridoo. In the afternoon we went through Noosa and picked up H, C, J & H. On the way to Brisbane we got stuck in a traffic jam because a Greyhound bus that passed us had caught on fire, and the whole back half of it was completely burnt out (there were no injuries).

H & C were going to stay with Charlie's family in Brisbane for 2 weeks, so this was the last night with all 5 of us. Because we were running late, we just headed straight to the bar. We had a good laugh, although a lot of the time I just sat and watched the 2 couples being all 'coupley' whilst I had my ever-loving beer.

Thursday, me, John & Hannah headed to Byron Bay. First stop was to do Zorbing! Zorbing is where 3 of you are put in a huge plastic ball, with a bit of water in, and you just roll down the hill! It was so much fun, shame we only got one go. Everyone was a bit nervous about it, and I was in the first one to go down. I wish I did some Will Ferrell esq screaming on the way down to freak everyone out and make them even more nervous.

In the afternoon we stopped at Surfer's Paradise for a couple of hours. The centre of town reminded me of the streets built around the entrances to theme parks such as Disneyland and Universal Studios. It was a shame we didn't spend the night there because then we could have eaten at the Hard Rock Cafe.

The next stop was Nimbin. This is a small hippy town, where the laws of the outer world do not apply. Everyone there was stoned. About 4 different people offered to sell me weed. It was like we had gone in time machine back to San Francisco in the 60s.

That evening we arrived at Byron Bay and went to a bar called Cheeky Monkeys. They had a wet t-shirt competition which was bloody brilliant! Sorry, I mean it was very degrading to women. I was appalled.

Because I was running out of time in Oz, I only had one day in Byron Bay. And it rained. ALL day. Nevertheless I still wandered around town and went to the beach. I saw a HUGE snake just crossing the road. That night was my last with John & Hannah because Byron was their last stop, so we went out for drinks (for a change). It was a shame to leave them because we'd had such a good laugh together over the last few weeks.
